Norman W. Nelson Professional engineer, Air Force veteran, of Chester Norman W. Nelson, 86, of Chester Township, N.J., died Sunday at Morristown Medical Center. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Sept. 9, at 11 a.m. at the Zion Lutheran Church, Schooley’s Mountain Road, Long Valley, N.J. Born in Chicago, Ill., Norman was a son of the late William and Edna (Baumgartner) Nelson. He served in the US Air Force during the Korean War. He was a graduate of the University of Illinois (BS) and Stevens Institute of Technology (MS, PhD). Before his retirement, he worked as a professional engineer for Exxon Research and Engineering in Florham Park, N.J. Norman was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Long Valley, N.J., the Morris Center YMCA, and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. He loved skiing, physical fitness, gardening, and financial planning. Norman is survived by his wife of 62 years, Marilyn (Winterfeldt); three sons, David, Bruce and his wife, Christine, and Paul; one daughter, Christine Nelson, and eight grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, 23 East 26th St. New York, N.Y. 10010, in memory of Norman.
